The successful applicant will work under the direction of
a senior biologist to produce a catalog of high-priority old growth reserves on
the Tongass National Forest.
The 2008 Tongass Land
and Resource Management Plan (TLMP) established boundaries for 239 small Old
Growth Reserves across the 17-million-acre Tongass National Forest.
Draft locations for these reserves were initially established by the 1997 TLMP;
the 2008 modifications represent, in most cases, improvements to bring the
reserves into compliance with criteria established for the Tongass Conservation
Strategy.Complete histories for each reserve (boundaries, size,
composition, issues, and justifications specific to each reserve) are
documented in a series of GIS layers and Excel spreadsheets produced by the
interagency team that reviewed each of the 239 reserves between 2005 and
2007.We need a student with GIS and technical
writing skills to use the existing information to create a catalog of 48
priority reserves. If time allows, additional reserves will be added to the
catalog. For each reserve, we need a one-page map (produced from GIS
coverages), and one page of text describing the reserve, the issues considered,
and recommendations. The resulting document will be used by biologists and land
managers in several agencies, as we consider individual projects and
landscape-scale plans with potential to affect wildlife habitat, especially
timber harvest and transportation projects.
